How MateTel works

During the bitches season the ovum (egg) matures in approximately the middle of the cycle at about 11-14 days the traditional time to attempt a mating

The fertile period peaks for about 2-3 days although this can depend on many biological and environmental factors.

Fortunately specific biological changes can indicate fertile & infertile periods for example the rise in basal body temperature and peaking of the estrogens LH hormone,

Just prior to ovulation electrolytes (or salts) increase dramatically in bodily fluids for example cervical mucus and saliva along with the hormone estrogens, consequently being able to identify this increase in electrolytes is an alternative and simple method for identifying the onset of ovulation.

Historically it has been clinically and scientifically observed that,

During the fertile period a sample of normal saliva or cervical mucus when dried and examined under a microscope contains structures resembling ferns, these fern structures are actually the dried crystallisation of the electrolytes or salts that are evident during this dramatic increase in electrolytes present during ovulation.

This phenomenon has been known for years to researchers, MateTel is a precision miniature microscope designed specifically to aid in the indication of the fertile period, ferning starts approximately 3 days before and ceases 2-3 days after ovulation.  

Using the MateTel ovulation tester

1. Remove the lid

2. Pull out the eyepiece/slide assembly from the holder

3. Obtain a spontaneously produced sample of saliva from your bitch, this can be achieved by dabbing on her tongue or the inside of her cheek (jowl) allow the sample to dry this is the most important part of the procedure as the sample must be completely dry for crystallization to occur, note humidity conditions may cause the drying to take longer, you can use a hairdryer on a low setting to speed up the drying time.

4. Place the eyepiece back into the holder and hold up to any ambient light, focus by turning the threaded eyepiece until the sample is clearly visible.

5. Clean the slide thoroughly as you would glasses.
